If you go to the far west end of Main Street, right across from O'Sullivan's Italian Pub, you'll find a house that could be straight out of a fairy tale. And for those of us vintage-loving, thrift-shopping, artsy folks out there, Mercantile on Main really is a fairy tale come true.
Owners Pam and Bob Michel, along with their daughters Hannah and Addie, have transformed this historic home into an antique store, featuring furniture, collectibles, one of a kind art, and even their own vintage fashion line.
Pam Michel has been in the antique business for over 25 years. In the 1980s, she owned the Antiqurie on Broadway, and more recently, she worked on the renovation of the antique lights in the Brookside Mansion at the University of Saint Francis. In 2009, Pam and Bob bought a then-dilapidated house at 1753 West Main Street from the county on back taxes. Four years and countless hours of renovation later, Mercantile on Main opened and was featured in the ARCH home tour of the Nebraska Neighborhood.
Mercantile opened in the summer of 2013 and hasn't lost an ounce of momentum yet. The family is constantly working on new restoration and upcycling projects to feature in the store. They also provide repair service to light fixtures, chandeliers, lampshades, and wall sconces.
You can see many of their unique items and projects on their website, as well as their Facebook and Instagram. But to really appreciate the full scope, I recommend going into the shop yourself! They are open Monday thru Thursday from 11 am to 5 pm and on Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm.
